50′s Diner @ Baguio City

16 May

Choosing which to dine while in Baguio City is not a problem as there’s a slew of restaurants to choose from around the city. However, when choosing which diner to go, better consider the topmost important factor- Will there be ample parking? And, please, consider that too when looking for hotel accommodation in the city.

It’s actually better to ride a taxi when you are not so sure if there’s parking area. Or, better still, just walk.

Just as we did when we decided to visit 50′s Diner after the daughter’s graduation at University of the Philippines-Baguio City. Their Leonard Wood Road branch is just a 5-minutes walk from where the daughter stays. So, no need to bring transport. Besides, going out at night is the nicest thing in Baguio. You’ll feel the coldness of the air sweeping up your face. It’s just so romantic walking in at nigh. Just brace your legs for going and down and winding through the streets. Hey, it’s what makes it all the more exciting when you are up visiting the city -The Walking!

And, so after few take of deep breaths, we find ourselves in front of this famed diner in the city.

And, what to expect in this 50′s theme diner? Arts, photos, pink-neon lights, and a vintage jukebox in one corner. I wonder if it’s working.

A lot of Miss Monroe’s golden years photos. And, yeah, Grease…who could forget?

There’s the bar area. We would have wanted to have our seat there, but then, the owner guide us in one corner. Yes, that’s the owner in red shirt. He’s been busy cleaning tables!

Daughter said waiting time here at 50′s Diner takes longer especially on weekends. Because its the hang-out of most tourists, and of course, students and their barkadas.

Good thing that it took us only 5 minutes and we’re guided to our seats. And while waiting for our foodies, we enjoyed our sips….

Then, we realized, we shouldn’t have taken our drinks first because we’re surprised at the humongous servings of meals served on us….

The little girl ordered their budget meal Mama’s Kidd which cost 95 Php.

The daughter takes on one of the diner’s best seller -Guys on the Hood for 130 Php a plate.

Me and the hubs shared this Full House plate which cost 180 Php. As you can see, there’s two servings of spicy chicken wings, macaroni, and 2 servings of deep fried spring rolls consisting of crunchy cucumber, carrots and ripe mangoes -It becomes my instant favorite!

Honestly, the taste of their food is just average. I’m sure there’s a lot of other restaurants in the city that would have offered better tasting food. But, the affordability of their servings (huge servings) must be the reason why the diner has become very popular. Not to mention the novelty of what the place has become.

Bonding In The Kitchen

14 May

Rains have come. Soil have been saturated by the much needed water. Thank Heavens, at least, we’re free from watering the plants. The dry season has brought the plants to almost lifeless. Even if we need to water them two times a day.

Yes, rain’s such a relief. Even to the weather. Somehow, it has doused out the hotness particularly during daytime. Unbearable summer it has become, really. That, even in the mid-morning I couldn’t stay longer in the kitchen. I always loved to cook. But, hated the heat. So, I asked the good husband to install exhaust fan in the kitchen to suck out the heat from the inside. Now, the ceiling fan and the exhaust fan worked together to cool the kitchen.

And, to add more glory to my cooking session, the husband had also fix his cool dave murray strat and hang it to the corner near the kitchen area. He said that he could play some of my favorite music while I do my cooking.

Sounds great isn’t it? There’s nothing better than working in a nice environment. Plus, getting all the chances to be together and bonded – him, playing his music and me, doing what I love to do.

A simple Good Friday lunch turned out to be a feast. My boys asked for grilled tilapia and some eggplants. So, I told them I’d cooked some “buro” -burong kanin na may isda (fermented rice with fish). It’s a perfect dip for the fish and veggies.

How To Watch Old Movies At High Quality Format

17 Mar

There are times that you wanted to watch some old or vintage movies at home. But the problem is, such movies won’t play at most DVD or movie players nowadays. Aside from that, it might be a bit painful for you to watch it because of its low quality audio and video format.

But nowadays, watching old movies and video clips at home is not a big problem anymore. There are already ways to convert and watch them at today’s high quality standards. Here are few of those known methods that are quite popular and effective.

Hire Experts To Convert The Movie

There are online services like CyberLink that convert old movies into a HD and even 3D format. They are not free though, in fact, they are quit a bit pricey since the conversion will take a lot of hours and especial tools and skills to do so.

Use Special Movie Player Software

If conversion of old movie is too much for you, then getting or buying a tool to play old movies is what I can recommend. You can buy and check out the movie player software from CyberLink that can play old movies into HD quality. This is more practical than the first method I wrote above.

If you follow the two given methods above, for sure you can watch and fully enjoy old movies or DVDs at its highest quality format.

Food Spotting: Ilocos Empanada

10 Mar

Of all the suggested foodies people have asked me to try while in Ilocos, I took fancy on their popular Empanada (baked pastry). Why? Oh! I simply love empanadas.

And so, when we reach Batac town (still in Ilocos Norte), I chance upon this new building just in front of the Marcos Museum. Locals call the building Batac Riverside Empanadahan. The well-maintained building comprise of a series of eatery with its famed empanada taking the centerstage. While other moms are busy shopping for souvenir stuff, I tag two of my mommy friends to have a taste of the Ilocos Empanada.

As I said the place is well-maintained plus the empanadas are cooked in front of you. So, you get that piping hot and crispy pastry.

I bide my time to watch this empanada maker how he kneaded the dough until it becomes too thin and filled with nutritious veggies and then, finally, deep-fried few pieces into the hot pan.

Why Batac Empanada is popular?

The Filling: Not your typical meat pies. Ilocos empanada is made of vegetable filling -grated green papaya, bean sprouts, and their very own local longganisa.Plus of course, the egg in the middle which makes it all the more, Oh! So temptingly delicious. Really.

The Dough: Where we often use flour as our dough for our pies, in Batac or the rest of the municipalities there, they use rice flour instead of flour. That must’ve  made the empanada more crispier and tastier.

The Color. Golden orange which makes the empanada more inviting. This golden empanada distinguished itself from other empanadas particularly the Vigan Empanada at Plaza Burgos which uses no food coloring but equally delicious also. Cooks use atswete (annato) as food color.

The Price: 35 pesos each or 3 for 100. Not bad. Considering its size and the filling and a whole egg in every piece.

Enough saying… LET’S EAT!

Believe me. I did finished two empanadas in one sitting.

BURP! BURP!

PS: If you haven’t yet decided where to go this summer, why not explore the province of Ilocos. Surely, it’s an enjoyable place where the whole family could truly enjoy. Definitely worth a visit.

Wellness tips for the coming holidays

7 Dec

Holidays are here again. I wonder how much tolerance should I possessed so as not to go astray and go wayward on my eating habits. With eating habits, I can be lax with my intake. As I always find a good deal of reasoning for the constant bingeing. I am gonna have my exercise after eating or engage into a favao wellness, perhaps. An old exercise of mine. Please tell me there are others who are doing the same thing. So that I will be less guilty :)

Please can anyone tell me how hard it is getting away from food especially when there are so many events this coming holiday season -corporate parties, family reunions, school reunions, and many more family togetherness. How can we avoid eating more especially this holiday season?

Watch out for the grocery items.

As a budget conscious buyer, we are always on the look out for anything on sale. Remember, it’s when holiday season when most grocery shops try to “lure” consumers to buy items really not necessary yet are very tempting. It’s because these businesses knew that at every holidays or events, families and friends are overflowing with parties. And, at parties, our table “should be” overflowing with foods. We tend to buy items that are easily prepared yet we forget how they are laden with sugars and salts. Something that are unhealthy. And, so we are complaining of weight gains during the holidays?

Let’s review our grocery lists, plan head-on what to cook and stick to what are on the lists. Buy what is necessary and those that promotes better health.

Holidays are made for drinking.

What are holidays without wines? People stocked up on drinks, some are too pricey, it can overshoot our budget yet people do not mind, reasoning that holidays just comes not very so often. And, yet we are complaining of weight gains during the holidays?

We can always have wines. But, try to be a smart buyer. Read labels. We maybe looking the best tasting wine with less alcohol content out in the shops. Remember, too, that these are the types that are high in sugars and other flavors that may induce weight gain. So, the next time we shop for bottle of holiday wines, choose the ones with lesser flavors.

Same with sodas, why not opt for natural fruit juices, for these are the kind of drinks where health is promoted.

Yes, holidays are made for merrymaking and it all goes down to eating and drinking. But, do not try to let loose on bad habits. That we can always exercise after the bingeing. We can always enjoy the merriment the holidays can bring. Just be smart on the foods and drinks we picked.

How about you, what were your plans to avoid the holiday “fats”?

This is a sponsored post however, all the points and views are my own.
