Feeling sushi

6 Jul

For lunch today, we had shrimps (fresh water shrimps which I had bought at a vendor who frequents our community) which I sautéed in butter, garlic, seasoned with salt, ground black pepper and chili powder. And, more chili powder, please.

And for veggies, I sautéed into the same pan asparagus and carrots. And, season with the same as in above.

But, before I could even start eating, an idea pop right off me. I remembered Mirage’s photo posted on her Facebook account. It was a sushi veggie (er, I do not know how's it's called in Japanese). How I crave! It’s the reason why I dropped by at SM supermarket last Monday and bought 2 heads of romaine lettuce. And, before the remaining leaves get too limpy, I grabbed them from the fridge. Made a quick rinse with tap water and dry them on paper towels.

Then, I lined the romaine atop a nori sheet.

Next, comes the asparagus and the carrots…

Give the nori a quick roll starting on the diagonal end…

Another foodie shot. Please bear with my aging digicam :)

Because, my sushi veggie was already seasoned, it’s ready for biting. After the first major super crrrunchy bite, I then, again remembered Mirage’s suggestion…soya sauce…or Kikkoman.

Yes!

And, what do you know???

Burp. Burp. Excuse me :)

tuna maki loaf

9 Aug

Continually searching/thinking for quick and easy-does-it recipes for my family is one of the things I am busy at. Aside from doing routinely house chores, doing DIY’s, and, sometimes feeding my vanities. Yes, YAMI, “walang naaaksayang oras”. Specially, when you have a family who eat like pigs^_^.

Hence, mommy in the kitchen needs to grab recipes worth trying out. Thanks  Sassy Chef for the great posties.

My kids loved sandwiches. As I said, sometimes they got bored on things I prepared for them. Finding recipes is easy, but I am not one who religiously followed everything what is stated. I do variation depending on the availability of the listed ingredients.

This Gardenia classic white bread recipe is very easy to do…

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • loaf bread

  • sliced cheese

  • tuna chunks in water

  • mayonnaise

  • diced bell pepper and onions (optional)

  • salt and ground pepper to taste

PROCEDURE:

  • First, mix in the tuna chunks with mayonnaise, bell pepper and onion and salt and pepper. Set aside.

  • Next, trim the loaf’s edges.

  • Flatten each loaf bread lightly using rolling pin.

  • Place a spoonful of the tuna mixture and spread evenly on the loaf.

  • Top with cheese.

  • Roll tightly and wrap in a plastic wrap.

  • Refrigerate for at least an hour.

  •  Slice thinly and ENJOY this sushi-type roll.

maybe i can perfect the art of rolling the second time around ^_^, the bread’s literally soft:)

FTF: sushi

7 Jan

konnichi wa. we’re turning japanese today as i finally made my first attempt at making futomaki, a type of sushi rolled into dried seaweeds or nori. i was to try westernized sushi also, the california rolls, but too bad, i failed to find any tobiko or fish roe.

bought dried nori and the crabsticks @SM. i was looking for avocado at our local market, i found none...

my sushi rice was "palpak", became too sticky...maybe i could cook it better next time...

cut the sushi onto desired size after rolling them out on a bamboo mat...

nori can be too sticky & difficult to hold when your hands are too wet

my very own futomaki w/ kikkoman as dip…served on our noche buena.

til the next sushi...sayonara ^_^

HAPPY WEEKEND AHEAD FOOD TRIPPERS…
