50′s Diner @ Baguio City

16 May

Choosing which to dine while in Baguio City is not a problem as there’s a slew of restaurants to choose from around the city. However, when choosing which diner to go, better consider the topmost important factor- Will there be ample parking? And, please, consider that too when looking for hotel accommodation in the city.

It’s actually better to ride a taxi when you are not so sure if there’s parking area. Or, better still, just walk.

Just as we did when we decided to visit 50′s Diner after the daughter’s graduation at University of the Philippines-Baguio City. Their Leonard Wood Road branch is just a 5-minutes walk from where the daughter stays. So, no need to bring transport. Besides, going out at night is the nicest thing in Baguio. You’ll feel the coldness of the air sweeping up your face. It’s just so romantic walking in at night. Just brace your legs for going and down and winding through the streets. Hey, it’s what makes it all the more exciting when you are up visiting the city -The Walking!

And, so after few take of deep breaths, we find ourselves in front of this hype diner in the city.

And, what to expect in this 50′s theme diner? Arts, photos, pink-neon lights, and a vintage jukebox in one corner. I wonder if it’s working.

A lot of Miss Monroe’s golden years photos. And, yeah, Grease…who could forget?

There’s the bar area. We would have wanted to have our seat there, but then, the owner guide us in one corner. Yes, that’s the owner in red shirt. He’s been busy cleaning tables!

Daughter said waiting time here at 50′s Diner takes longer especially on weekends. Because its the hang-out of most tourists, and of course, students and their barkadas.

Good thing that it took us only 5 minutes and we’re guided to our seats. And while waiting for our foodies, we enjoyed our sips….

Then, we realized, we shouldn’t have taken our drinks first because we’re surprised at the humongous servings of meals served on us….

The little girl ordered their budget meal Mama’s Kidd which cost 95 Php.

The daughter takes on one of the diner’s best seller -Guys on the Hood for 130 Php a plate.

Me and the hubs shared this Full House plate which cost 180 Php. As you can see, there’s two servings of spicy chicken wings, macaroni, and 2 servings of deep fried spring rolls consisting of crunchy cucumber, carrots and ripe mangoes -It becomes my instant favorite!

Honestly, the taste of their food is just average. I’m sure there’s a lot of other restaurants in the city that would have offered better tasting food. But, the affordability of their servings (huge servings) must be the reason why the diner has become very popular. Not to mention the novelty of what the place has become.

Baguio peanut brittle

21 Jul

Scrapping the plan of going to Mine’s View Park because of heavy torrents, it also means not buying goodies at the famed Good Shepherd Convent at Gibraltar Road. The convent is just few meters walk from Mine’s View and their ube jam is to die for ^_^. Really.

But then, there’s ube jams at the Baguio public market. But, but, beware. There were many “fake” ube jams that proliferate in market shops. Been “victimized” in the past. If you want the best tasting ube jam at Baguio City, go check out the convent, you’ll see lots of goodies there.

Sadly here, we got only few sweet treats to bring back home. Rainy months were not the season for really red and succulent fresh strawberries. Was able to find little ones at the market. I skipped buying. Instead, I managed to slipped into my “travel bag” the usual Baguio veggies and strawberry jam which the kids liked to combine with peanut butter, and, few small jars of this peanut brittle. There were lots of peanut brittle displayed in the main Baguio market alley but this one’s, we prefer. Not too sweet, whole peanuts and the taste of butter is really good in which others do not have. Each jar cost P60. I skipped those that sells 3 for P100 or 4 for P100. Too sweet and the peanuts seemed to be MISSING^_^.

beef broccoli

14 Apr

We had a haste trip to Baguio City last Friday and because it’s an emergency (ouch!) trip, we have no time to roam around. Shall I say, I am too emotional to go about the city. But, I managed to squeeze in a little market rendezvous.

Though, I got only few because at 6 in the morning, Baguio City market is still yawning. Vendors were still starting to open their stores and vegetables were just starting to be wheeled in.

Here’s my little veggie loots:

Fresh mushrooms, cucumbers for five pesos^_^, broccolis and ice lettuces. I really don’t know why they call it ice lettuce, thought they were called Romaine Lettuce…What do you think? I was looking for  “real lettuces”, but, I said, maybe I was too early, fresh vegetables were just arriving.

And, here’s the broccoli the next day we return home…

I got half a kilo of beef loin in the freezer and also found half pack of Knorr Cream of Mushroom in the pantry. I try not to cook beef because as I always said, I m not into beef recipes. Beef usually turns to rubber when I cooked it. Luckily, I the beef turned out to be edible.

WHAT I DID?

-marinade the beef in Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper

-meanwhile, mix a spoonful of olive oil and few drops of lemon with the broccoli and microwave for 2 minutes at high temp.

-remove the broccoli in the microwave and transfer it to a bowl of iced water. Let stand for a while.

-saute the beef in oil or butter (I used butter) for three minutes.

-dissolved the cream of mushrooms in half a cup of water, then slowly whisked in to the sauteed beef.

-simmer no more than 10 minutes.

-add the broccoli. And, it’s a ready meal.

BROCCOLI TIPS:

-Broccoli’s rich in Vitamin C and said to contain anti-cancer compounds.

-Heat reduces the potency of the anti-cancer compound in broccoli. Steaming is best when preparing broccoli.

-After steaming, placing the broccoli in iced water will make it more crunchier and the broccoli more greener. I have watched that in Food Network.

And, I thought beef’s not my thing…
